Sex Addiction Is Only Funny If It’s Not Your Balls In A Bind

It is probably everyone’s favorite addiction to poke fun at.  How can it be that someone is addicted to sex?  I thought that everyone is “addicted” to sex. Unfortunately in the case of people that have real problems, sex and sexual actions have affected their daily life in a negative manner.  Daily functions that most people take for granted are interrupted by overwhelming desires for sexual gratification.  That is some deep shit!!

Sex addiction has gained some fame recently.  It started with the success of the Showtime’s drama/comedy Californication which revolves around a writer played by actor David Duchovney who is struggling with addictions to drugs and sex.  Then in an example of life imitating art, Duchovney himself  had to to check into a treatment facility for his addiction to sex.  He sites his addiction as one of the reasons why his marriage to actress Tea Leoni has fallen apart.  I bet David doesn’t think being addicted to sex is that great.

Some of the symptoms that are associated with this addiction are:

  • Compulsive masturbation
  • Multiple partners
  • Consistent use of pornography
  • Prostitution
  • Exhibitionism
  • Voyeurism
  • Sexual harassment
  • Even in extreme cases, rape

Duchovney is an extreme case when it comes to sexual addiction because he is famous and as we all know, fame in this country gets you much further than minimum wage.  His ability and resources to fulfill his urges is probably a lot easier than your average guy or girl.  And don’t be fooled, just because men have a reputation for being the more sexually aggressive of the two genders it doesn’t mean that a women could not be addicted to sex.

The solution to being a sexual addict is not any different than that of any other addiction.  The first step in recovering is to admit that you have a problem.  With drugs and alcohol it is much more obvious.  Because sex is such a taboo topic, people that feel they suffer from this kind of affliction have limited resources were they can turn.  You may never know that someone is addicted sex.  You know when an alcohol has taken control of someones life but a sex addict might be masturbating under the table watching you eat chicken and you may never know.

So what does someone do? First, they seek help.  Most 12 step programs have a fellowship that encompasses sexual addiction.  Once again, similarly with drugs and alcohol, a person needs to seek treatment in the form of therapy and counseling to work on their addiction.  In the most extreme cases, drugs designed for helping curb obsessive-compulsive disorders like
Prozac could be used to curb impulses.

This thing is now joke.  Can you imagine not being able to go out and do things because your desire to masturbate is too great.  It seems like fun and games because everyone likes getting laid but when it turns into an obsession then maybe it is time to talk about it.
