Dr. Drew Has His Next Hit in VH-1’s Sober House

In a jungle of reality television shows airing on VH-1 alone, it’s hard to predict which shows will stand out and find success after their first seasons. However, Dr. Drew seems to be 2 for 2 with his shows Celebrity Rehab and his newest show, Sober House.

The concept for Sober House came from the first season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, when cast members where given the opportunity to live in a drug-free facility where they could make an easier transition into their everyday lives (while staying sober of course).

At the end of Celebrity Rehab season 2, producers gave cast members the same chance to live in a transitional drug free home, only this time it would become its own show. And even though Sober House is, in theory, supposed to be a more toned down version of Celebrity Rehab (documenting a sober cast, living sober lives), the issue of exploitation is something that continues to plague Dr. Drew’s on-air rehabs.

Dr. Drew and VH-1 defend the shows by declaring that the patients/cast members are receiving treatment that desperately need and otherwise, may never receive. However, the fact that some of these so-called celebrities may not seek treatment if it wasn’t syndicated on cable television seems to be another issue entirely.

Catch Dr. Drew along with Rodney King, Nikki McKibbin, Steven Adler, Amber Smith and even Andy Dick (he joins the show mid-season) at 10 p.m. on VH-1. You can also check out the first episode along with full episodes of Celebrity Rehab at www.VH1.com.
