Alcohol Consumption Among College Students

A recent study on alcohol and drug education explored alcohol consumption among college students in order to better understand why college students drink, but more importantly, what factors contribute to changes in patterns of consumption. The study compared many commonly used measures of alcohol consumption, an independent survey along with former studies from the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and used that information in order to make accurate conclusions.

The study points out that increased alcohol consumption among college students is a growing problem. Understanding the drinking patterns of college students carries important implications for policy makers, college administrators and mental health professionals.

Participants in the survey were asked to measure the frequency and quantity of their alcohol consumption, and note the number of times they recall “binge drinking” (4 drinks for women and 5 drinks for men). However, it should be kept in mind that the surveys should be seen as a summary of behavior rather than an accurate measure of consumption patterns.

The study found that several important variables contribute to pattern changes in alcohol consumption among college students. Student drinking is contingent on a variety of external factors, including day of the week, school holidays, scheduled exam periods, and the week of the semester. Not only did the average of those who did drink vary from day to day, but the study also found that the composition of drinkers varied from week to week.

Furthermore, the study found that their may be a severe misrepresentation in current data concerning alcohol consumption among college students. The data showed an underestimation in the quantity of alcohol consumption during each occasion. The findings will be instrumental in improving the ability of college administrators and health professionals to adequately identify problem drinking and alcoholism.

Students these days should really be cautious with their drinking. It could affect their grades and being that most college kids aren’t very responsible, they could really get themselves in a load of trouble. Thanks for the informative read!
